Announcing FILMONIK 2.0

Odder, February 1st 2009, from 7.30pm

Filmonik 1.0 was the region’s first “Open Mic Night” for filmmakers, attracting national attention for its unique screening policy. Emphasising resourcefulness and raw talent over polish and high production values, it offers an open door and a warm welcome for those making films with the minimum of means.

Now, after a few months off to recharge the batteries, Filmonik is back – and back to basics. We’ve an exciting new venue - Odder, winner of the Beda Awards for Best Bar UK & Best Bar North 07 – 08 - and a new screening schedule – first Sunday, every other month. But our commitment to film remains unchanged. As before, we will provide a genuine, censure-free platform. We offer a chance for experimentation and eccentricity, for unexpected collaborations and maverick creativity to flourish. We want filmmakers to be inspired, encouraged, even driven to create new work specifically for our screenings.

We will give you a screen. We will give you a slot. Now get out there and create. Make something new. We challenge you to challenge yourselves.

We are interested in hearing from filmmakers who feel up to that challenge, who have work they want to screen, or films they want to make; from those of you who’ve been with us from the start, and from those of you who want to be part of Filmonik 2.0. Check out our revamped website at www.filmonik.com or email us for more information at info@filmonik.com.

Podcast Episode 1 goes live!

The first episode of the new Filmonik Podcast is now online and available to download. This blog will keep you up-to-date with everything that happens on the podcast, including links mentioned in each episode.

FP Ep.1:

1. D.I.F.F. (Discerning, Intelligent, Film, Fan) - The DIFF film may be familar to some, having been screened at Filmonik and as part of the 2006 Kabaret event. It's a light hearted film with a serious message about supporting the Filmonik film nights. Starring our very own Jamie in the lead role as the DIFF, the film also features another Filmonik regular Stewart L.D. Laing as the narrator.

2. An interview with Jamie & Goz - Jamie & Goz set up Filmonik, both as an outlet to show their own films and as a forum to support other filmmakers in the UK. This interview explains a little about how Filmonik came about, what it's purpose is and how it can help the independent filmmaker.

3. Shut Up Shop by James Graham - This was voted the overall winning film at the recent 'Best of Filmonik' night, which marked the 3oth birthday of the monthly screenings. The film was selected by a panel of judges: Ric Michael (Baby Cow), Liz Molyneux (BBC Current Affairs), Paul Barron, (Channel M / University of Salford), Kate Taylor (Northern Film Network / London Short Film Festival) and Sarah Perks (Cornerhouse / Exposures Film Festival) from the short-listed films that had been selected by the evenings audience. Check out all the winners here.

That's all for now, be sure to subscribe and we'll see you at the next monthly screening.

Set Text Event at Salford Film Festival

Screening: Monday 26th November
Salford Arts Theatre, Langworthy Salford
8pm

Salford Film Festival will run from 24th - 28th November, and Filmonik is running a 'Set-Text' filmmaking event in the run-up to the festival, similar to a project we ran with Halloween Short Film Festival at the ICA in London last year.

The idea is that filmmakers will create films based on a number of 'Set Texts' that we provide. The resulting films will be screened at a special event on November 26th, at which we'll be able to see how different filmmakers have interpreted the same scripts.

We have some texts ready to go, and maybe a few more to come in. We're now ready to invite filmmakers to get their name down to make a film for the event (and go out and start making it!).

If you'd like to be sent a selction of texts to choose from email us at: salfordfilm@filmonik.com

A few pointers / rules:

* You don't have to follow the text exactly, by any means. Use it as a springboard for ideas. Take the film in a different direction if you like. But we want to be able to see a clear relation to the initial idea.
* Not everyone will be sent the same texts to consider. We'll be trying to make sure that each text is filmed at least twice.
* Films must be between 1 and 7 minutes in length.
* You must credit the writer of your chosen text in the credits of your film. If you develop the script/text further then you should obviously credit yourself too, in a developing role.
* Be sure to tell us which text you've chosen as soon as possible after receiving them from us, and email us back with all your relevant contact details.
* You must make your film once you commit - if you don't then we'll have no films to show on the night, simple as that!
* There'll be a Filmonik 'tag' to go on the end of the film - we'll reveal what that must say closer to the time.
* Films can be screened from miniDV or DVD.

It may take us a few days to get back to you with the texts, so please be patient.

Happy shooting!
